NAFOW Calgary 2016

May 9th: Llyn Rhos-Ddu via Ynys Llanddwyn to a home east of Malltraeth [about 10 miles] FOCUS: YNYS LLANDDWYN AND FLOWERS

An interesting walk on a blustery day! We were very impressed with the car park area in the Newborough forest close to Ynys Llanddwyn – clean, fresh, with wonderful carvings and signs leading us to the beach. Walked over to Ynys Llanddwyn. Explored the island associated with St. Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of lovers. Please try and identify the wild flowers we saw. Thanks to Ed who accompanied us and who gave us a detailed account of points of interest..

Fantastic pictures, we are not very good on the flowers! No translation for ‘ gwnhingaer in the dictionary, you will probably have to ask someone in North Wales!

  2. #1 Squill – very pretty! A whole field of them
    #2 Silverweed
#3 Stitchwort either Greater or Lesser – I can’t gauge the size
    #4 Common Speedwell
#5 is a vetch I think Narrow Leaved vetch
    #6 Black Meddick
    #7?? still looking

They may well have local names. Many of these or similar species can be seen in the Rockies, but not #1 as far as I know.

    Love Anne

  3. #7 Spreading yellow sorrel

The leaves go very red when exposed to strong sunlight. That’s why it was difficult to name.

Well done, Mona and David. You’ve shown great determination and evidently, you’re having lots of pleasure on your walk. Have followed your progress with great interest and have enjoyed the photos. You asked about the word “Cwninghaer Fawr”. It’s not a part of my daily vocabulary, but I’m sure it means “A Large Rabbit Warren”. Translated piecemeal, it means “rabbit fortress”. That can only mean a warren! Best Wishes for the rest of your walk. Huw T. (Williams, Treorci)
